“Grand Nada” – Embracing Existential Nihilism
From the Artist: The Story Behind Grand Nada
“What is Grand Nada? Suuri tyhjyys. The Great Nothing.”
Jolea first encountered the concept of Grand Nada in 2017 during a visit to Venice, Italy. While attending an art exhibition titled “Intuition” at the historic Palazzo Fortuny, Jolea stepped into a dimly lit room housing a single, imposing black painting by Thierry de Cordier, aptly named Grand Nada.
The painting’s vast blackness and unsettling energy resonated deeply. For Jolea, who occasionally struggles with melancholy, the artwork seemed to absorb the darkness within, offering a strange sense of relief and healing in return.
Since then, Grand Nada has reappeared in unexpected forms — not the painting itself, but the familiar presence of darkness. Jolea describes encountering it under the starless skies of the Finnish Polar Night (Kaamos) and in fleeting, introspective moments. Sometimes it lingers; sometimes it merely passes by.
The Concept of Grand Nada
Grand Nada explores themes of existential nihilism — the belief that life has no inherent meaning. Jolea challenges listeners to confront the void and recognize that the only meaning life holds is the one you create for yourself. Not society, not religion, nor family and friends can define it — the choice is yours alone.
Grand Nada is an invitation “to stare into the darkness and decide for yourself.”
The album’s immersive soundscapes perfectly embody this introspection, blending atmospheric tones with a profound philosophical message.
